Who we are:

Picture
Family Promise of Irving is a faith-based, non-profit agency that helps children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. Family Promise provides a safe environment in which families can stay together while they work toward their goals of jobs or job training, budgeting, and other skills which ultimately lead to securing permanent housing.

How does it work?

  • Support is given to families through a network of local faith communities who use their facilities to provide safe, overnight shelter for 3-5 families, one week at a time, 4-5 times a year on a rotating basis.
  • Families arrive at the Host Congregation in the evening (between 5-6pm) and leave the next morning (between 5-6am) every day for seven days, before moving to the next congregation.
  • Members of these Host Congregations provide meals, companionship, spend the night with the families and transport them to and from a Day Facility on the network van.
  • During the day, the families work at the Day Facility with the Director (a professional social service provider) who assists them in setting and reaching goals that will allow them to move into permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

Is it efficient?

  • FPI’s modest initial budget of $90,000 will serve 15-20 families a year and is funded through direct cash and in-kind contributions from individuals, companies and organizations, and from two or three fund-raising events each year.
  • During the first year, the Director is the only paid staff person.  As the network becomes financially stronger, a part-time case worker and possibly part-time van drivers will be added to the staff.
  • With limited paid staff, and relying on volunteers to operate our program, Family Promise networks are efficient in their use of funds, able to leverage every $1 donated funding into $3 of service.
  • Family Promise of Irving is staffed with more than 1,000 volunteers from the 17 churches with a potential for 20 or more churches by the time we have all the congregations we need.

Is it successful?

  • The national success rate for families who complete the program is 80%.  Success means the family was able to maintain stable housing for two years (the Family Promise case worker follows up with each family for two years after they obtain stable housing).
